Jon Lester Is Back in the Game

After winning a World Series and pitching a no-hitter: Non-hodgkin's anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. Those are sobering words for a 22-year-old rookie enjoying his first year in the major leagues. But Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester stayed calm when he got the diagnosis.

“I thought, ‘What do we need to do to get rid of this?’ ” he says. “That’s just the way I was raised. You don’t say, ‘Why me?’ or, ‘What if?’ It’s the hand I was dealt. I got to play the cards—and make the best of it.”

After getting the news almost three years ago, Lester underwent six chemotherapy sessions in four months. Three more annual checkups are all that now stand between him and a clean bill of health. | @ltaLINK | @ltaSEARCH | @ltaCLIP
