Cancer caregivers risk their own health with products they handle

Shocking and sobering report on the risks posed for those who care for the world's sickest patients. Their own health is in danger due to the risk of exposure to carcinogenic products that are also effective to save or prolong the lives of patients they treat. Transfusion nurses and pharmacists are the most at risk according to this report.

Karen Lewis: Call for screening

Karen Lewis knew what the possibilities were when a routine medical exam returned an abnormal white blood cell count on her four years ago. “I worked in a cancer center,” she said. “I knew.”

The long-time hospital pharmacist, 57, was soon diagnosed with a pre-cancerous blood disease called myelodysplastic syndrome. Her doctor immediately ordered her to stop working with or around chemo agents.
